Short Description

Australian Technology Park, Sydney-Locomotive Building Chiller Plant Upgrade

  • Client: Australian Technology Park
  • Value: $2.5 Million
  • Size: 35,000 sqm
  • Categories : Building Refurbishment

The existing air cooled chillers at ATP were unreliable and inefficient and coming to the end of their life. Intelle Building Services were commissioned directly by Australian Technology Park as an independent services design consultant to upgrade the chiller plant and control systems with a modern, efficient and more flexible cooling plant to provide for both current and future cooling demands and well as temporary high-load cooling requirements for various exhibitions including Australian Fashion Week.

Following an in-depth feasibility, Intelle recommended to upgrade the plant to a water-cooled system with two unequal high-efficiency chillers and variable speed pumps together with a new BMCS control system.

As with all projects ESD considerations involved the specification of high-efficiency chillers, VSDs on all pumps, low noise cooling towers and the switch to a water-cooled plant resulting in an initial 35% energy saving on previous comparable operation.

A new BMCS with upgraded control strategies was also implemented as part of the project.

Of particular challenge was the need to work within a very restrictive plant space. We met the onerous boundary acoustic criteria requiring careful selection of low noise equipment, as well as heritage restrictions associated with the existing building façade.
